Hamburg, novembre de 1963. Peter Miller, un periodista independent, troba el diari personal del jueu Salomon Tauber, que s'acaba de suïcidar. Al relat es recull tot el trauma del captiveri en un camp de concentració nazi durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, i les atrocitats comeses pel comandant de la planta, el capità Eduard Roschmann, conegut com el Carnisser. Segons el testimoniatge de Tauber, el sanguinari militar encara viu a Alemanya, sota identitat falsa. Miller decideix seguir-li la pista.
