1500-luvun alkupuoli jossain päin Eurooppaa. Tohtori Craven on veteraanivelho jo ties monennessa polvessa, asustellen linnassaan teini-ikäisen tyttärensä kera palvoen ja surren ilta toisensa jälkeen pari vuotta takaperin menehtyneen Lenore-vaimonsa muistoa.
