明青学園に健丈高校から練習試合の申し込みが来る。健丈高校は、のびしろのある明青学園に得体のしれない不気味さを感じているようだ。わざわざ手の内を明かすこともないと断ることにした大山監督。ところがまんまと健丈高校の作戦にハマり、試合の日程が決まってしまう。明青学園と因縁のある健丈高校との対戦、さらに健丈高校の方から申し込んだ練習試合ということで周囲はざわついていた。当日、マウンドにエースである投馬の姿はない。試合前のロードワークに出かけた投馬と駒は、ひったくり犯に遭遇。身柄を確保した後、警察に協力していたのだ。手の内を明かしたくない大山監督は「捜査への協力は市民の義務だ、慌てる必要はない」と投馬たちに伝えていた。代わりに投げるのは“ただのピッチャー”1年の夏野。「初回で試合を壊してやれ」と選手を送り出した健丈高校の小宮山監督だったが、予想外に翻弄される。
